Abstract: The write-up intends to elucidate and clearly examine the concept of childcentered
education with a view to highlighting some of its intrinsic qualities which when
viewed in the light of childhood education can’t but justified the reason why the method is
considered one of the best in childhood development. In addition, attempt is equally made
to assess this method to prove its desirability or otherwise in the light of contemporary
educational development.

PRE-SERVICE SCIENCE TEACHERS REFLECTIVITY ON THE SEQUENCE AND CONSEQUENCES OF POWERPOINT PRESENTATIONS IN MICROTEACHING

ABSTRACT: Globally, a step up from routine teaching to technology enhanced one
continues to grow exponentially and this has serious implications for the nature and purpose
of Educational institutions. (PowerPoint Microsoft corp.) is a widely used presentation
program that originated in the world of business but has now become common place in the
world of Education Technology. It is a tool one can use to communicate ideas effectively
through visual aids that look professionally designed yet are easy to make, with its slides
created for presentation either through over-heads or on-screen electronic shows. In
addition with preparation of speaker notes, outline printing and audience hand-outs among
others in required output; culminated a file make-up in PowerPoint presentation. In
acknowledgement of the benefits accruing such practice, many countries have incorporated
PowerPoint in their teacher preparation program. This study therefore involved a set of
Thirty–eight (38) pre-service Science teachers in their second year; who made the successful
list in first semester examination of 2011/2012 session, in a College of Education, South-
West, Nigeria. They were subjected into microteaching mood as a system of controlled
practice that makes it possible to concentrate on specified teaching behaviour in order to give
the pre-service Science teachers confidence, support and feedback by letting them try out
among friends and colleagues a short slice of what they plan to do with their real students
during their professional practice in schools. This serves as a medium of reflection and a
genuine lens into the world of practice. Exposure to this activity succeeded their performance
in the theory of practicum teaching in their first semester examination which serves as a prerequisite
for the microteaching as dictated by National Commission for Colleges of
Education in Nigeria. The researcher sought for stages of reflectivity as adapted from
Amobi,2005 to Describe, Inform, Confront and Reconstruct the contents of the lesson in a
micro teaching by Pre-service Science teachers with and without PowerPoint presentation in
an experimental study. The four hypothesis generated to guide the study were answered
having subjected the data collected to Pearson Correlation Coefficients and ANOVA
statistics while conclusions and recommendations were made.

THE IMPACT OF TEACHER EDUCATION PROGRAMME AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY IN THE NIGERIAN SCHOOLS SYSTEM

ABSTRACT: This article discussed the Impact of Teacher Education Programme and
Information Technology in Nigeria. The concept of a teacher, the National Policy Statement
on Goals, Information Technology and Teacher Education Programme was explained in
details with strong emphasis on areas like psychology of education, history of education,
sociology of education among others. A reviewed of major impact of a teacher education
were clearly stated. A teacher is says to be a vital tool in any educational system. Vision
statement of the national policy on information technology such as; education, creation of
wealth, poverty eradication, et cetera are stated. Information technology components like
electronics and non-electronics which include the impact of information technology were
discussed in the work. Finally, the needs and appropriate recommendations are stated.

CHALLENGES AND PROSPECTS FOR ECOLOGICAL CONSCIOUSNESS IN THE DESIGN OF ACADEMIC LIBRARY: THE CASE OF TERTIARY

ABSTRACT: This paper aims to determine the challenges and prospects for the design of
academic library within the context of ecological consciousness by investigating the
attributes of sustainable architecture based on the analysis of three tertiary institution
libraries in Yola, Nigeria. Using questionnaire survey and the attribute developed from
literature review on sustainable architecture and ecological conscious design, the findings
suggest that ecological consciousness is not effective in two of the cases as all the
attributes were either absent or not considered. The research hence contributes some
recommendation that shows that the design of ecological conscious building will vary
base on the type of building, geographical location and other ecological factors which
should be critically analysed in the design and the fact should be used throughout the
design stage to the construction.

ABSTRACT: Due to high rate of examination malpractices, prostitution, drop-outs and vices
in our tertiary institution today, one is force to look for alternative way of reducing such
societal ills through effective career counseling system. Online career counseling system has
emerged as a viable alternative to conventional counseling system. There are limitations to
the existing career counseling approaching in Nigeria. To address these shortcomings, we
have developed online career counseling suitable for deployment in any system connected to
a network (intranet, internet). The research work commenced with a study and overview of
career counseling. The different counseling approaches were surveyed. Some existing webbased
counseling system were examined with their applicability and limitation to our peculiar
environment noted. Based on our findings, a Online Career Counseling was developed to
provide career counseling to candidates on the suitability or otherwise of their chosen career.
The key factors identified and used in evaluating the candidate’s suitable for a chosen career
include: his academic achievement, his personal attributes. Most of the existing online career
storage techniques rely on relation model and relational database technologies for these
tasks. The mis-match of the rigid 2D tables of relational model jeopardizes the scalability of
such repositories and frequently renders a repository inefficient for some types of data and
queries. We have proposed a system that can store data in the XML repository. The model
was finally implemented as a web-based system using baby web as web server, ASP as the
server-side scripting language, HTML 5.0 as client-side scripting language and XML as the
relational database

TEACHER’S PERCEPTION OF PRINCIPALS’ EMOTIONAL MANAGEMENT ABILITY IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN BAYELSA STATE NIGERIA

ABSTRACT:

The purpose of this study was to examine the emotional management abilities of secondary school principals through the perception of teachers and the influence of this on
secondary school leadership in Bayelsa State. A descriptive survey design was adopted a sample size of 300. Teachers were randomly selected from six out of sixteen government owned
secondary schools in Bayelsa State. Out of the six schools used for the study, four are headed by male principals while the other two schools are headed by female principals. The main
instrument used for the study was a rating scale titled “Principal’s Emotional Management
Ability Rating Scale” (PEMARS) and “secondary school leadership practices inventory”
(SSLPT). The data were collected and analyzed using frequency counts, means standard deviation and percentages. t-test statistical and chi square (x2) statistical tools were used to
test hypotheses at the probability level of significance of P<O.05. The major findings of the study are that secondary school principals in Bayelsa State are perceived by their teachers to
have emotional management competencies needed in handling challenges, implementation of positive organizational changes and exhibition of effective leadership practices. Also they
were found to have emotional management ability in creating conducive teaching and learning environment that enhances collaboration and building of team work. Based on the
finding it was commended that the emotional intelligences test and emotional management competence training skill should be given to would be principals by school administrators for
effective evaluation and assessment before a school is given to them to head.

ABSTRACT:

This research project focuses on the application of GIS to the performance distribution of Junior Secondary Schools Certificate Examination / available facilities in Lagos
Mainland Local Government Area. The data used in the course of the project were results of the Junior Secondary School Certificate Examination in Lagos Mainland Local Government
Area from 1997 to 2004, the Administrative Map of Lagos Mainland Local Government Area., the GPS point position coordinates of the various schools, the Digital photographs of the schools and data on the facilities available in each school such as library, sports field and laboratory. The data were structured in such a way that it can be queried to obtain the required result so as to achieve the aim and objective of the study. The AutoCAD 2000 was used to digitize the raster image of the study area. The attributes were attached in Arcview environment. Various queries were performed on the database created for all the junior
secondary schools within the study area, and necessary conclusions and recommendations were made.
