Abstract

This study assessed the Education Sector Reforms and Entrepreneurship. The present Situation in Nigeria posed serious threats and challenges to both government and well meaning citizens. These socio-economic problems call for different strategies and action for it to be ameliorated. Entrepreneurship education has been embraced by almost all the developed countries and its capabilities and efficacy in springing up economies is not in doubt. It is believe that refocusing education system will immensely contributes in developing the spirit and culture of entrepreneurship in country. The methodology here Involves review of the current situation especially existing education policies. It was discovered that the current education system is deficient in providing the necessary impetus for development. It also finds out that same problems keep escalating despite various efforts by the government to review policies and programmes in the past. The uniqueness of the paper is looking at the education sector reforms and entrepreneurship. It also emphasizes the significance, advantages, limitations and possible application.

PREMARITAL SEXUAL INVOLVEMENT OF FEMALE STUDENTS IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN OSOGBO, OSUN STATE, NIGERIA

 ABSTRACT

Sexual promiscuity among adolescents is reaching an alarming height, despite consistent and widespread propaganda on HIV/AIDS menace and other sexually transmitted diseases. This study investigated incidence of sexual activity among females in secondary schools in Osogbo, Osun State, Nigeria. The objectives of this study were to examine the incidence of premarital sex, factors that predispose the adolescent female to the behaviour and their awareness of consequences of premarital sex. The study was carried out with the use of a questionnaire in sampling 500 female students from 8 different schools in Osogbo. The data revealed that majority of the adolescents had engaged in premarital sex. It also showed that romantic love was the major predisposing factor in engaging in premarital sex. Unwanted pregnancy was the most widely known consequences of premarital sex. The study recommended that parents and educationists should be stronger role models for the children, sex education should be added to the school’s curriculum and that awareness of the consequence of premarital sex should be intensified, with particular emphasis on pregnancy and STDs.

ASSESSMENT OF JOB PLACEMENT, ENVIRONMENT, AND SOCIO-ECONOMIC IMPACTS ON LABOUR MIGRATION AMONG PRIMARY SCHOOL TEACHERS IN MUBI SOUTH LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, ADAMAWA STATE

ABSTRACT

One of the important problems of great magnitudes which regularly feature in the literature of teacher education in Nigeria is that of teacher retention in our school system. Teachers now abandon their teaching jobs at alarming rate for other more rewarding occupations within and outside the country. Labour migration in our schools have been attributed to the unattractiveness of the teaching profession due to poor remuneration, poor conditions of service, undue low social status and poor public image. Lickert scale techniques was used to analyze the questionnaires that were administered to teachers, headmasters, supervisors and the administrative staff of the Local Education Authority in the Mubi south Local Government Area (LGA) to investigate the impacts of job placement, environment and socio-economic factors on the labour migration among the primary school teachers. The study revealed that there is no impact of job placement, place of posting and the attitudes of school managers on teachers’ labour migration in the LGA, but the social status of teaching profession and teachers’ incentives has great impact on teachers’ labour mobility and retention. The opinions of those who were interviewed were integrated in the analysis. It was suggested that the social status of our teachers should be raised and salaries should be more attractive than any other professions since they are the trainers of the other professions

THE LANGUAGE OF POETRY: A CASE STUDY OF WISE-SAYINGS, IDIOMS AND FIGURATIVE EXPRESSIONS IN NIYI OSUNDARE’S MIDLIFE

ABSTRACT

One of the distinctive features of poetry is its economy and peculiarity of words.  A poet has the ability to comment on several volumes of issues just in few words.  Not only this, a good poem is a by-product of skill and craft.  Since poetry is realized through language (spoken or written) understanding how poets coin expressions to achieve most times, rhythm, pregnant meanings  “memorability” is sina qua non in appreciating poetic works.  To this end, in this paper, Niyi Osundare’s Midlife will be examined to further throw more light on certain aspect of poetic language and how it works.

PERCEPTION OF INCIDENCES OF INTERNET CRIMES AMONG TERTIARY INSTITUTION STUDENTS’ IN SOUTH-WEST, NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

This study investigated the perceptions of incidences of internet crimes among tertiary institution students’ in South-West, Nigeria. The study was the descriptive type while a survey method was applied. Five hundred and thirty- five (535) male and female students were involved in the study. The instrument used for data collection is Tertiary Students’ Questionnaire on Internet Crime’ (TSQIC). Three research questions were answered in the course of the study. Percentage, Mean, and Standard Deviation were used for data analysis. Results indicated that students are not only aware of, but perpetrate all the twenty-two tested internet crimes. The results also show that tertiary students’ majorly learn internet crimes through dismissed Information Technology experts in other companies or organizations. The study therefore recommended that further studies be conducted in other states in Nigeria to determine the realistic state of university students’ involvement in internet crimes in order to fashion an organized attempt at stemming the tide of internet crime among tertiary institution students’ in Nigeria.

MOTHERS’ WORKING STATUS AS CORRELATE OF CHILDREN’S SOCIAL ADJUSTMENT IN LAGOS, NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

The study investigates mothers’ occupational status as correlate of children’s social adjustment in Lagos, Nigeria. Four hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. A self-designed instrument using 4-point Likert-type rating scale was used for collection of data. Descriptive survey research design was employed in this study.  The sample for the study comprised 160 SS2 students selected from four secondary schools from two local educational districts of Lagos State, Nigeria.  The statistical technique employed for the analysis of data was the t-test. Analysis of data and results led to the rejection of all the hypotheses. Recommendations were made that efforts must be made to help children to develop positive social adjustment, while there should be standard day-care centres for the children of working mothers to serve as substitute care givers. The society must also be ready and willing to give each individual an opportunity to function in accordance with his capabilities.

FOOD SECURITY IN NIGERIA AND THE ROLE OF SOCIAL STUDIES EDUCATION

ABSTRACT

Food is one of man’s necessities and its scarcity leads to hunger, starvation, poverty, malnutrition and susceptibility to diseases. Abundance of food ensures good health, improved standard of living, steady supply of raw materials to agro-based industries and foreign exchange. Nigeria’s initial interest in agriculture died down following the discovery of oil and subsequent oil boom. Failure to concentrate on and invest in agriculture has brought its hardship on Nigeria and Nigerians. To reverse the trend, the researcher suggests measures like increased funding, increased interest in research and development (R&D), abundant supply of affordable fertilizers, mechanized farming and increased storage/preservation capacities. The contributions of Social Studies Education to food security are also highlighted.

REVISION OF KERR’S MODEL OF THE CURRICULUM FOR A MORE EFFECTIVE AND DYNAMIC SCIENCE EDUCATION

ABSTRACT

Kerr’s (1972) model of the curriculum was an improvement over Tyler’s (1949) model. It is, however, known that new concepts, knowledge and methods of teaching invariably influence the curriculum and hence its development. For example Shulman’s (1986) concept of Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) and van den Akker’s (2004) concept of Levels of the Curriculum have greatly influenced curriculum development and implementation. For this reason this paper critically assessed Kerr’s model of the curriculum in the light of emerging curriculum concepts and knowledge and how it could be modified to make it suitable for a more effective science education. The paper looked at the strengths and weaknesses of Kerr’s model and proposed a new and simpler model of the curriculum. The usability of the proposed model is illustrated through specific examples that indicate how it can be adapted to various levels of the curriculum.

ABSTRACT

Online assessment of student learning is a common feature in many distances – learning programs. But the prevention of plagiarism has been of great concern without much attention given to the associated problems of online assessment of student learning. Though the objectives of distance–learning program attempt to focus on enhanced sustainable implementation of Education, it would appear that this focus has lost its potency as a means to bring about the needed Educational change in Nigeria. This paper highlights some issues of online assessment of student learning as well as the attendant problems. It also examines the significance of these issues for a sustainable online assessment in contemporary Nigeria.
