ABSTRACT

The primitive methods used by the small scale farmers for planting grain crops constitute a major problem for enhancing higher productivity and yield of crops as this methods of seed planting results in low seed placement, at irregular depth and irregular plant to plant and row to row spacing. In order to increase the productivity of the peasant farmers a single –row crop planter for small scale farmer was developed and evaluated. The major components of the planter are hopper, the meterins
unit, the drive mechanism, furrow opener, seed delivery tube, adjustable handle and furrow covering device. Field test was performed to determine the planting efficiency and field efficiency. The evaluation test showed that the planter has planting efficiency of 68%, 81% and 76% and field efficiency of 71%, 83% and 74% at operating speed of 1.8km/hr, 1.2km/hr and 0.9km/hr respectively. The conclusions drawn from the performance
evaluation of the planter revealed that the planter had best performance at operating speed of 1.2km/hr, followed by performance at operating speed of 0.9km/hr and minimum performance at operating speed of 1.8km/hr and above.

ABSTRACT

The contributions of Agricultural and Manufacturing Sectors to Economic Growth cannot be overemphasized. This study examined the effect of agricultural and manufacturing productivity on economic growth in Nigeria using data for the period 1980 to 2020. The tests for time series properties of the variables was carried out by Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) test which suggested that the variables are integrated of order 1. Hence, the error correction model was used to estimate the short run coefficients of the model. The co-integration test indicated the presence of a long run relationship among the variables. The results reveal that
agricultural output has a positive and significant effect on economic
growth both in the short run and in the long run while manufacturing output only has a positive relationship with economic growth in the short run. In the long run, the relationship is negative but insignificant. The study suggested that investment in the agricultural and manufacturing sectors should be promoted to stimulate economic growth. Also, a stable exchange rate system should be encouraged and maintained to boost economic growth.

This survey studied the challenges and remedies of small-scale broiler production in Bali Local Government Area of Taraba State. Respondents were drawn from six wards that make up Bali A, Bali B, Suntai, Maihula, Kaigama and Kusum wards. The respondents were small-scale broiler producers. Two hundred and forty (240) producers were selected through a system of random sampling. Data collected were on constraints and possible remedies associated with small-scale broiler production in the
study area. Structured questionnaires where the instrument used for data collection. Analytical tool used were percentages. Therefore, percentages were used to describe the constraints and remedies associated with small-scale broiler production. The result revealed that majority of the respondents on major constraints faced by the producers were not significantly affected in the proportion of 17.5%, 17.1%, 16.7%, 16.2% and 15.8% mostly in disease/pest, mortality, poor quality ingredients, credit/loan, cost of feed and technical know-how. While the major possible solutions to the constraints of small-scale broiler producers, which followed same trend in percentages and ironically invariables. Likewise, the minor constraints of small-scale broiler producers designated proportionally as 17.5%, 17.1% and 16.2% were also not significantly related to one another and to the minor possible solutions
of constraints of small-scale broiler producers which government must tackle so as to enhance the commercialization of small-scale broiler industry in Nigeria.

ABSTRACT

The trial was conducted at the Research and Teaching farm, School of Agriculture and Agricultural Technology, Imo State Polytechnic Umuagwo. The experiment was arranged in a factorial design fitted into a Randomized Completely Block Design with four (4) replications.
Each replication is made up of 9 plots making a total of 36 plots. The treatments include T1 – 0t/ha Pig manure, 10t/ha and 15t/ha which were applied to three varieties of canavalia spp. Data were obtained at 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 weeks after planting on plant height, number of leaves/plant, leaf area and the number of pods/plant obtained. At 10 weeks after planting. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) result indicates that 15t/ha performed best in all the three varieties of canavalia spp. However the best result was observed from canavalia gladiata (V1) in all the parameters investigated. Therefore canavalia gladiata (V1) is adaptable in the study area than V2 (canavalia ensiformis) and V3 (canavalia rosea).

ABSTRACT

This study was undertaken to complement the recent unprecedented global focus on Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) as key agents of socio-economic development, by examining the impact of the natureand quality of the recordkeeping practices of micro enterprises (MEs) on their performance, via a survey of 127 firms in Jos metropolis. The resulting data, collected through a structured set of questionnaires, were analysed using Pearson Correlation Coefficient and Regression Analysis, with the outcome of a strong relationship between the nature and quality of records kept by this category of firms and their performance in terms of growth in sales, profit and capital. However, subjecting the data to regression analysis shows only quality of record keeping significantly impacting performance, hence the recommendations for improved quality of record-keeping for ease of assessment of their profitability, access to funding and aiding  informed business decision making that will enhance performance.

ABSTRACT

The reason why many technicians earn fat incomes than some university graduates in advanced countries is because the technicians acquired more practical skills than the graduates who acquired theoretical knowledge while in the universities. Skills development is very crucial to Nigeria’s economic growth and development and this necessitated the establishment of the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) to develop positive mind-set among the youths towards self-employment after graduation. To this end, the major objective of this study is to examine the relationship between skill acquisition programmes undertaken by the ITF and entrepreneurial development in Nigeria. The study’s population consisted of 250 trainee entrepreneurs undergoing training at ITF training facility in Abuja. Descriptive design was adopted with administration of questionnaire to beneficiaries of ITF training programmes. Analytical tools include the use of percentages, tabular presentation and chi-square (X2) for hypothesis testing. The findings indicate that some entrepreneurs have acquired technical, marketingand managerial skills, which have impacted on increased entrepreneurship development in Nigeria. Based on the findings, the study recommends that ITF should increase its efforts in promoting entrepreneurship education by offering more skill-oriented training programmes that will benefit Nigerian economic growth and development. In conclusion, the researchers submit that adequate entrepreneurial skills are necessary for effective and efficient running of entrepreneurial business in Nigeria.

ABSTRACT

Most investors, stakeholders, customers and financial institutions develop perception about a firm’s financial performance due to the insufficient analysis of the firm in terms of financial performance. Focusing on only one indicators of financial performance and ignoring others may lead information users to wrong financial decisions, whileanalysing financial performance of companies based on only asset criteria size may be misleading. The objective of this paper was to evaluate the financial performance of Senior Staff Multipurpose Society, Federal Polytechnic Bida. The methodology used was through secondary data collection. Through this method the researchers made use of the annual financial statement of Senior Staff Multipurpose Co-operative Society, Federal Polytechnic Bida from 2013-2019.  Analysis was done using Altman Z-Score index which predicts corporate financial performance, bankruptcy and distress. Findings revealed that Senior Staff Multipurpose Co-operative Society financial performance using Z-Score Index stood at 2.37, 2.19, 2.14, 2.36, 2.33, 2.34 and 2.24 for 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 respectively. It can be concluded based on the study that Senstaf Co-operative Society financial evaluation result compared to Z-score decision criteria is in grey zone but needs to do more by our evaluation. The Altman index decision criteria is given as Z-Score higher than 2.99 means good performance, Z-Score between 1.89-2.99 as in good condition but needs to do more & Z-Score less than 1.89 as the firm financial performance is poor. We therefore recommended that Senstaf Co-operative Society should put more effort to improve in its Sales to Total Asset Value, this would help drive more investment.

The paper highlighted the fact that even though most companies prepare an excellent annual report and accounts, still, if they have a weak system of corporate governance systems in their organisation, the probability of the enterprise going under is high.  Many countries around the world have made efforts to forestall corporations operating within their economy collapsing by constituting various bodies and committees to fashion out the best corporate governance principles to adopt, which would be in tandem with their peculiar socio-economic makeup. In Nigeria, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in collaboration with the Corporate Affairs Commission was mandated to identify weaknesses in the current corporate governance practices.Finding from this study suggest that the Nigerian Stock Exchange hascarried out their regulatory functions.  While this is so, the management of the NSE must ensure that it has an arrangement for continual training of its supervisors to get them to gully knowledgeable about modern trends and new technologies to aid them efficiently discharge their duties.
