ABSTRACT

The effect of Pawpaw plant partextracts (leaf, stem bark, root and flower) at different dosages (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 2.5g) against Sitophilus zeamais infesting stored maize grains were assessed at the Biology Laboratory of the Southwestern University, Okun-Owa. Treatments were admixed with 30g of maize grains, infested with ten adults of S. zeamais and stored in 3.0 mm petri dishes. The experiment was laid out in completely randomized design (CRD) and replicated four times each. Data were collected on adult mortality, oviposition and percentage weight loss of the grain in each of the replicate. Data collected were analyzed using analysis of variance, while sample means were separated with the aid of least significant difference (LSD) at 5%. There were significant differences in adult mortality of S. zeamais treated with different dosages of the plant parts powder. The flower powder of the plant recorded the highest means adult mortality (10) compared to the lowest adult mortality of 0.1 obtained at the control experiment. The flower part powder also revealed the lowest mean eggs laid (oviposition) (7.1) and the lowest grain damage loss (1.4 %) when compared with the values of 18.7 and 40.0 obtained for mean eggs laid and percentage weight loss obtained when stem bark and control treatments respectively. This clearly showed that the powder of the flower of C. papaya showed good potential as bio-insecticide for protecting stored maize grains.

ABSTRACT

Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli is one of the most important pathogens causing severe and persistent watery diarrhoea, abdominal pain, fever, vomiting and often lead to death in humans. Diarrhoeic faecal samples were collected from 210 children (aged < 5 years) in three different hospitals which are Federal Medical centre Idi-Aba Abeokuta, Otunba Tunwase Padectrics Centre, Ijebu Ode and Olabisi Onabanjo Teaching hospital Sagamu after questionnaires were administered. The stool samples were cultured for bacteria on Eosin methylene blue agar, MacConkey agar, and Salmonella-Shigella agar. Escherichia coli were identified using biochemical characterization. Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli were serotyped by slide agglutination test using specific Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli monovalent antisera (EPEC O111, O126, O86, O55, O128 and O26). Antibiotic sensitivity was carried out using disc diffusion method. Plasmids from multi-drug resistant Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli were extracted by Alkali-lysis method and electrophoresed. Genomic DNA were extracted from Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli and subjected to multiplex Polymerase Chain Reaction for detection of effacing and attaching (eae), bundle-forming pili (bfp) and enteropathogenic Escherichia coli adherence factor (eaef) genes. The strains that exhibited multiple drug resistant were 21(18.8%) with plasmids detected in 12(57.1%) of the 21 multi-drug resistance Escherichia coli. Twenty-one of the Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli strains possessed effacing and attaching genes, 6 possessed bfp while 18 possessed eaef. Typical Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli strains were more prevalent (tEPEC) with (71.4%) than atypical (aEPEC) (28.6%). The molecular characterization of the Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli among children in this study, revealed typical Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (tEPEC) as the dominant strain in Ogun state.

 ABSTRACT

Nematode pests in Katsina state have not been widely studied.  Information on the occurrence and distribution of these pests in various irrigation sites in the state is scanty.  This study investigated the geographical distribution and population density of nematodes associated with some irrigation sites in the state.  Ten irrigation sites across the state were surveyed in consultation with the Department of Irrigation in the Ministry of Agriculture and natural Resources, Katsina State.  Five composite soil samples were taken at different crop fields in each of the irrigation sites.  Extraction of nematodes from the samples was done using modified sieving and decanting techniques as described by Coyne et al. Analysis of the samples revealed 23 genera of plant parasitic nematodes.  The most prominent nematodes found in all the samples collected from the irrigation sites were: Rotylenchus, Tylenchus, Pratylenchus, Scutellonema, Aphelenchus, Aphelenchoides, Meloidogyne, Hoplolaimus, and paratylenchus.  While Telotylenchus, Belonolaimus, Ditylenchus, Heterodera, Longidorus, and Criconemoides occurred in very low numbers.  The study indicated a widespread distribution of important plant-parasitic nematodes in the irrigation sites.  The major nematodes identified in this study portend serious implications on profitable production of crop in the irrigation sites, because these nematodes are known to be damaging to crops.  Enlightenment programme for the farmers in the irrigation site should therefore be embarked upon by the proper agencies to inform them of the presence of plant-parasitic nematodes in their crop fields and the implications.

ABSTRACT

The study was designed to evaluate extension technology packages meant for rice production with the aim of assessing the rice production in Ogoja L.G.A. To identify various improved rice production packages recommended to farmers in the area, to determine methods of delivery to farmers adopted by extension assess degree of improved farmers to the rice production packages, to determine the effect of extension recommendations on rice production and identify variables influencing adoption of extension rice production programmes. Data was collected from 90 sampled rice farmers and 15 extension agents with the aid of semi-structured questionnaire. Analysis of data was done using percentages, frequencies and Chi-square statistics. The result shows lack of incentives, inadequate funding and irregular visitation which brought more serious constraints to the rice farmer. There is no significant relationship between improved technology packages and selected variable like (degree of extension contacts and farm size). Adoption of improved technology package is not significantly related to the level of education age and family size of the farmer. The adoption of improved technology package depends significantly on the source of information. Finally, it was recommended that the programme should be well funded and extension agents enlightened more on how to handle new programmes for better acceptance by rural farmers.

ABSTRACT

Livestock is a critical element in livelihoods, income generation, food security and agricultural development of Gedarif state of Sudan. This paper attempts to shed light on the role of livestock in the economy of the state. The study relies heavily on secondary data. It finds that Livestock plays an important role in the state’s economy and in the welfare of the people. Livestock production is the second major economic activity in the state after agriculture and it provides a mean for risk management during drought and crop failure period. Livestock sector is faced by different problems such as diseases, difficulty in access to finance by producers and inadequate services. It is recommended that veterinary services, livestock breed and natural pastures for grazing should be improved and studies on the economics of livestock and livelihoods should be conducted. Demarcation of migration routes, reduction of taxes, training of pastoralists and other stakeholders and provision of water for animals and households are very important for improving livestock production.
